Filed under: Job Hunting and Working

Cold calling is the hard way to find a job. Deaf people have better luck when they find jobs through a third party, such as the school they last graduated from, a friend who already works there, Voc Rehab, the state employment office, a previous contact who has seen your work, just about any other way that involves “pull”.
Another way is to open your own business and gain a reputation through your work. Soon the companies doing the work you are in get interested in buying out your “competition” and hiring you. This is a way to offer your services without the requirement of hiring you, i.e. becoming an independent worker available for one-time assignments, and many employers will want to “try before they buy.”
These days many companies are so afraid of the ADA they won’t hire unless they see your work and want it. Make up a portfolio of your work, pictures of your work, blueprint designs, and work orders that you have filled in the past so they know you are familiar with the terms. Include some letters of reference. Some people have saved this to a PDF file that is accessible online or to a CD-ROM that they leave with the company’s personnel office.
Tap into Voc Rehab for the equipment and funds to start a business. Some will advance the funds to do this as long as you have a business plan that is workable; in New York the VR has contacts with the local business college to evaluate these plans.
These are just opening ideas. Eventually you may have to move to find that first job, or keep on plugging until some employer decides to go out on a limb and give you a tryout. In today’s marketplace, working on third-party contacts or “networking” is necessary. Good luck and God bless.
That was how the deaf neon maker found his neon job after he graduated from TSD…thru a friend of a family member, I believe…then he worked there for many many years like 40 or 50 yrs even though the company was sold or bought out.
Are you sure you don’t want me to find and copy the Signews article? It had a picture or two.
If your email to Mack Gerry bounces back, please allow me to do this. This means giving out your mailing address to me via private email though.
Seems like you did not get enough training to develop a portfolio. Keep us updated about VR dealing with Jimmy Neon.
If I read the transcript correctly, he was not cold-calling. He was calling about an email the employer sent him regarding his resume.
I don’t know if this case would be “cold calling”- What I did for this job was go to the State Employment Service website. It was on an “referals” list from them. The website gave the e mail address.
I e-mailed my resume. Then they called the voice line at my home. That is the transcript of the relay call.
However- this morning I looked at my e mail. My neighbor and friend whom I have worked with and for in the past said that company called him- they want to see me about a job!
From what the e mail said- it is something I have done before in the Sign trade.
Either way- I am going in to see them today- along with another place I “cold Called” by e mailing in my resume- they want to see me also!
At least I do have leads and prospects!
I mentioned to Julia this morning- I cannot WAIT for interpreter to be found and approved by Voc Rehab- The counselor is only in her office maybe 3 days a week-
I get much better results on my own!
Today I am bringing my notebook computer to communicate with the business owners whom want to see me. It should work!
More posts to follow
Steve
One more thing. As per the relay call transcript- They said would e-mail me info as to their location. I NEVER recieved anything the rest of the day from them in e mail.
I was “writing this one off”,
But MAYBE they decided to contact my neighbor instead as his company is on the resume.

IcedTea:
Is there some way you could copy that SignNews article about the Deaf Neon maker and e-mail to us?
S
Steve, I forgot about my scanner. I’ll scan the article and email it to you.
Off I go to the library…
Are you able to “see” my email address? Well, if you do, send me an email so I can start the process of emailing you.
Yeah, I found the article. It’s the page 20 in the September 2006 issue.
Now the article refreshes my memory. Oh, it will be wonderful if you can get in touch with this fascinating man.
Now I will go to my email box and see if you sent me your email address.
Hey, Steve ~
I’m deaf, from NJ, and moved to CA 10 years ago. I’m also a recent LDS convert. Your name sounds very familiar! Were you ever a member of NWJAD?
At any rate, good luck with the job search … not easy at all!
Lisa
Hey Lisa-
I think I went to school with you. It was in Newark. E mail me at steveshumko@hotmail.com
I think your last name starts with “R” right?
